Here’s something delicious to make with allllll that snow! I admit, I’m a southern girl, so I don’t know all that much about snow. I didn’t grow up having snowball fights or making snow angels. My  mother, however, is a real northerner, and she told me about how they would make snow cream on days with freshly-fallen snow.

So, if you are trapped in your apartment like me, you might be getting a little stir crazy! A couple of hours ago, I put on my boots and went outside.  It is SO rare to see undisturbed snow in New York City, but since we are currently in the middle of a blizzard, this is one of those rare occasions. I set a pan outside and let it collect snow.

Once it was full, I brought it inside and mixed the snow with milk and maple syrup, which I then topped with honey and cocoa powder. It was really as simple as that! Since it’s still snowing, you still have time to do this! OR, if you are one of those fortunate people who live in an area nice enough where you can just gather undisturbed snow from the ground outside, you have plenty of time since I’m sure all of this snow isn’t melting anytime soon.

You can also use juice instead of milk if you’ve got that laying around!

Serves:

2 servings

Ingredients

  • 8 cups fresh snow
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1/3 – 1/2 cup maple syrup (more or less, depending on taste)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (optional)

Instructions

  1. Mix all ingredients together (more or less milk, depending on desired consistency, and more or less maple syrup, depending on desired sweetness).
  2. I then used a cup, which I packed the snow cream into, and then inverted it to serve.
  3. Serve with any desired toppings. (I made mine on the less sweet side, so I drizzled it with honey!)
